Marceal Zimmerman, 1918 -2013
Marceal Zimmerman, 94, of Ashland, passed away Wednesday morning, January 23, 2013 at Brethren Care Village in Ashland.
Marceal was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, December 22, 1918, the daughter of John Clifford and Florence May (nee Strow) Hawk. She was a graduate of Fort Wayne Business College and attended Purdue University. She had been a resident of Ashland for the past 67 years.
On January 14, 1942, Marceal married Eugene W. Zimmerman; they were married for 50 years until his death in 1992. Marceal was a homemaker, and a bookkeeper and assistant manager of the Brethren Bookstore in Ashland.
She was a member of Park Street Brethren Church, where she taught children’s Sunday School classes, belonged to the Women’s Missionary Society, and was secretary of the Official Board. She was a Girl Scout leader, and treasurer and council member of the City Sisters OSU Extension Chapter (who named her 2002 Homemaker of the Year). She was an active member of the Senior Citizens Center of Ashland County for many years.
She was a gifted seamstress, donating her talents to others. She took an active role in the church sewing group, providing items for mission outreach and local needs. Marceal and her late husband, Eugene, loved gardening and had a large vegetable and flower garden at their home which she continued to tend for many years after her husband passed away.
Marceal is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Jess (Larry) Hamilton of Ashland; two grandchildren, Paula (Kenneth) Chang of Menlo Park, CA, and Neil (Celandra) Hamilton of Los Altos, CA; three great grandchildren (Benjamin Chang, Samantha Hamilton and Madilynn Hamilton); and one sister, Reva Hartman of Fort. Wayne, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband (Eugene Zimmerman), brother (William Hawk) and sister (Betty Davenport).
Funeral services will be held Monday, January 28, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Denbow-Primm-Kemery Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Rowsburg Cemetery. Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the services at the funeral home on Monday.
