Obituary for H. Dale Calhoon

H. Dale Calhoon
H. Dale Calhoon, 101

H. Dale Calhoon, 101 of Mansfield, formerly of Ashland passed away on Sunday, September 3, 2017.

He was born on May 2, 1916 to the late Homer and Pearl Greer Calhoon near Butler on the farm that his great-great grandfather settled when he came to Ohio in 1831.

He attended Center Hall, a one room school, and graduated from Butler High School. During WWII he enlisted in the Navy, being assigned to the Amphibious Force and participated in the invasion of Sicily, Italy and Southern France, reaching the rank of Chief Motor Machinist Mate.

Dale retired from the Ohio Brass Iron Finishing Department after 38 years of employment. During his retirement years he enjoyed woodworking, hiking, following Cleveland sports teams and raising many broods of bluebirds in boxes he made. Most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He is a member of Park Street Brethren Church.

Dale is survived by three sons; Craig (Marion Sheridan) Calhoon of Olympia, Washington, Roger (Carol) Calhoon of Redmond, Washington, Jim (Kim) Calhoon of Ashland; one daughter, Sarah (Fred) Reuer of Centerville, OH; grandchildren, Jay, Stacy, Andrew, Julia, Sam, and Erica Calhoon, Megan Towles, Molly O’Rourke, Mindy Kreider, Elisabeth Kent, Katie Rezabec, Jack and Zoe Finlay; and eight great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Dale is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances Calhoon; one son, Ray; a granddaughter, Michele Kreider; one brother; and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held, Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. in the Park Street Brethren Church with Reverend Arden Gilmer officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the church. A graveside service will take place prior to the visitation on Saturday in the Ashland Cemetery at 9:30 a.m., where the Ashland Veterans Honor Guard will conduct full military honors.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of North Central Ohio, 1050 Dauch Drive, Ashland, Ohio 44805 or to Park Street Brethren Church, 619 Park Street, Ashland, Ohio 44805.

For those who may not be able to attend online condolences may be shared on the funeral home’s website at denbowfh.com.
