Samuel J. Thomas

Samuel J. Thomas, 92, died at home on February 4, 2018. Born in Round Knob, Pennsylvania on May 1, 1925 to Samuel J. and Edna P. (Clark, Foore) Thomas.
A U.S. Navy veteran of WWII having served aboard the U.S.S. LST 284 in the D Day invasion of Normandy, the invasion of southern France, then on to Okinawa where he was at the end of WWII in September 1945.
He retired in 1988 from the former A.L. Garber Co. after 39 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post #88, The Ohio LST/Amphibs Assoc., the United States LST Assoc. & the LST 325 Memorial Ship Assoc., and the Fraternal Order of eagles # 2178 of Ashand.
Survived by his wife of 73 years, Helen (Baker) Thomas whom he married on February 4, 1945. Children JoAnn (Jim) Denslow and Jim (Terri) Thomas; Grandchildren, Matthew Denslow, David (Melisa) Denslow, Jennifer Thomas (Justin Gray), Jamie Thomas; Great Grandchildren, Cassie, Gabby, Madelyn and Wyatt. Nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant granddaughter, Kathleen Thomas; 2 brothers and 2 sisters; In-laws and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will by held Thursday, February 8, 2018 at 12:00 noon at the Denbow-Gasche Funeral Home with Pastor Johnnie Swann officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 10:30 a.m. until the services at noon. Burial, with full military honors conducted by the Ashland Veterans Honor Guard, will be at the Ashland County Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the United Methodist Church of Savannah, P.O. Box 177 Savannah, Ohio 44874 or to Pathways Hospice, 619 Claremont Ave., Ashland, Ohio 44805.
