Mary Kathleen Wirts, 97
Mary Kathleen Wirts, 97 of Ashland passed away, Friday morning, July 27, 2018 in Brookwood Place at Brethren Care Village.
She was born on November 5, 1920 in Ashland to the late Kohler and Ruth (nee Wolfe) Scott.
Mary was a 1937 graduate of Ashland High School. She married the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Wirts on May 14, 1942. The newlyweds would call Ashland their home for 75 wonderful years. She was devoted wife and homemaker to her family.
Mary was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she was an active member of the Ladies Guild, she taught Sunday School, played the piano for the pre-school children and worked in the kitchen for many church meals and events.
Mary was a member of the Eastern Stars, member of the Newcomers Club and was an avid bridge player and belonged to several bridge clubs. She also enjoyed golfing with her husband and they both played in a Friday Night Couples League at Brookside. Her and Bob loved vacationing in the Outer Banks, North Carolina, with her children and grandchildren.
At a very young age Mary learned how to sew and made most of her girl’s school clothes. She was also known to many as “the seamstress” to go to for clothing alterations.
She is survived by her daughters, Sally (Stan) Valentine of Ashland; Carol (Tom) Harry of Suffolk, VA and Debra (Mike) Hanley of Virginia Beach, VA; six grandchildren, Christopher (Sabrina) Valentine, Benjamin (Toni) Valentine, Charles Thomas (Hanna) Harry, Robert Harry, Kelsey Hanley and Michael Hanley; five great grandchildren, Paige Driebelibis, Andrew (Taylor) Driebelibis, Rosemary and Abigail Valentine, and Rose Harry; one sister, Ruth Ann Rogers of Galion; and one brother, Richard Scott of Ashland.
In addition to her parents, Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Bob” Wirts on June 10, 2017; two brothers, Robert Scott and Donald Scott; and three sisters, Hazel Hyatt, Dorothy Lewis, and Susie Snow.
Funeral services will be held, Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Denbow-Gasche Funeral Home with Reverend Ben Roby officiating. A meal and time of fellowship will immediately following the service in the Legacy Room of the funeral home. Interment will follow lunch in the Ashland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 220 Sandusky St, Ashland, Ohio 44805 or to Hospice of North Central Ohio, 1050 Dauch Dr., Ashland, Ohio 44805.
