Obituary for Elizabeth Pastor

Elizabeth Pastor, 92, of Ashland, passed away, November 3, 2018 in her home.

She was born January 29, 1926, in Medina, Ohio, to the late Dr Peter and Maud Pastor.

Elizabeth was an outstanding pianist, educator, and community leader; at Ashland University and Cleveland Institute of Music. Elizabeth received her artist diploma from Boston’s Longy School of Music. She studied piano with Boris Goldovsky, Carl Frieberg, Beryl Rubinstein, and Arthur Loesser.

She made her debut at Town Hall, New York, and made solo appearances with leading orchestras throughout the country. Including the Cleveland Orchestra, the NBC Symphony in New York, the Boston Pops, the Las Vegas Philharmonic, Flagstaff, Arizona, and various orchestras in Ohio, including Mansfield, Wooster, and Ashland.

Elizabeth is survived by nieces; Miranda (Fred) Moritz, Jennifer (Mike) Vantusko, and Valorie Kolt, nephews; Drew (Adele) Pastor and Jeff Pastor, Many, Many dear friends, and students, past and present.
In addition to her parents, Elizabeth is preceded in death by her brothers; John and Scott Pastor, and a niece Alex Kolt.

There will be no services at this time.

I had the good fortune to meet Ms Pastor in my work as a reporter for the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
The story was about her leadership in the SAP(Save Ashland Pride)campaign, protesting the removal of trees.
We became friends, and I remember my wife and I attending her Piano Recital at Ashland College

Liz, (who was always 'LIZZY" to me) was one special lady. We met shortly after I started working for Ashland University back in 1986. Through the years rather than using her phone book Liz would always call me instead on the switchboard, then bring me a basket full of 'goodies' for Secretaries Day. Once she retired we had dinner regularly at Jake's Steakhouse. I visited her 'showcase home' on several occasions, and she never cooked but she'd always had something bought from the deli, and we'd sit for hours just visiting either in her kitchen or down in her 'Christmas Room'. Oh how I will miss those special 'chats/dinners'.

I was 7 or 8 when I first heard Elizabeth perform with Louis Pete and the Ashland Symphony. She was beautiful. It was my first experience hearing a concerto live. Much later 1960-61 I took piano lessons from Liz in that great Castle on Center street. These two years were very memorable with music, chess with her father, and great laughs during a faculty-student skit! For many years we kept in touch and remained friends. She was the leader in our visits to Severance Hall where we heard Gould, Serkin, Rubinstein, Gilels, Fleisher, and many others. That was a period of time when a few teachers and a small number of students were close friends. We were at Oberlin and Wooster and Kenyon and wherever the good arts and lectures were given. I am happy Elizabeth had a full, rich life of music and enjoyment and I am very happy that I was a small part of that period in the late 50s and early 60s. What wonderful memories! What good times! What freedom to be and to feel. It seems strange to write of her departure from the stage, a stage on which she realized herself completely and wonderfully.

Miss Pastor ( as she was always to me ) was my piano teacher at CIM in my early-late teens. I was frankly more interested in clothes, shoes and boys than practicing the piano. Instead of chastising me and demanding more, Miss Pastor talked and laughed with me, encouraged good choices, and laughed out loud at my funky 70’s platform shoes. Our lesson usually ran over by about an hour because we talked more than we played. She was an enormous influence on me and I will never forget her. Although I could never call her “Liz”, that is my only daughter’s name.... never really put it together until now!

I was fortunate to study piano with her my sophomore year in college. In that one short semester she shaped my love for the piano and transformed my playing. I couldn't wait for my lessons each week. At that time she drove a yellow convertible with a black top. I remember she picked me up in that
snazzy car and we went flying off to Oberlin College to hear Marilyn Horne. What a great gal! She was bigger than life!

I was so fortunate of having the opportunity of meeting Elizabeth many years ago. Such an amazing women. Her appreciation and love for fine arts displayed at her home was like walking into a museum. I loved hearing her stories behind every piece, every detail, every artist. She was such a joy to be with. So much fun. She enjoyed life to the fullest and all those in her life. The tremendous impact she had on our community, Ashland University, her students, and all who knew and loved her will never be forgotten. Her beautiful smile will shine forever.
