Reverend J. Ellen Nunnally, 65

J. Ellen Nunnally, 65, of Ashland died Tuesday morning, August 31, 2010, in the Kingston of Ashland, following a six week illness. She was surrounded by her loving family and devoted friend, Forrest Conrad.

She was born in Akron on June 5, 1945, to the late Alvon R. Cox and Harriet Nunnally Cox. She resided in Arlington, Virginia for thirty years and in Ashland the past ten years.

Ellen was a 1963 graduate of Ashland High School and a 1967 graduate of Ashland College where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree of Education. In 1976, she received her Master’s Degree of Divinity from the Virginia Theological Seminary and was ordained at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. Ellen also received a Master’s Degree of Fine Arts in writing from George Mason University.

She taught at the collegiate level for many years at George Mason University in Virginia and most recently at her alma mater, Ashland University. Along with her many achievements, she was an accomplished writer having published two books: Fore Mother’s and Deep Peace. Ellen was a recipient of several writing awards and grants, including the Ohio Arts Council award for fiction writing.

She will be most remembered for her generosity towards animals as well as her exuberance for spirituality.

Ellen is survived by her daughters, Holly Nunnally-Price of Seattle, Washington and Anna Rose Price of Virginia Beach, Virginia; a brother, David Cox (Jane) of Jackson, TN; an uncle, Colonel Frank Nunnally (Pat) of Tucson, AZ; a niece, Shannon Robertson (Kevin) of Trinity, AL; a nephew, Brad Cox of Jackson, TN; and a great nephew and niece, Brett and Lindsay Robertson of Trinity, AL.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 4, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. in St Matthew’s Episcopal Church with Reverend Kay Ashby officiating. Following the service, a small reception will be held in the St. Matthew’s social hall. In keeping with Ellen’s request the scattering of her ashes will take place privately at a later date in Virginia.
