Obituary for Laura Mae Riffle

Laura Mae Riffle, 100

Laura Mae Riffle, 100 of Ashland passed away, Wednesday, February 20, 2019 in Lutheran Village.

She was born on March 8, 1918 in Braxton County, West Virginia to the late Guy E. and Ocie Mae (nee Perkins) Hudkins.

Following high school, she went on to earn a bachelor’s degree of Education from Ashland College.
She married the love of her life, Hayward Paul Riffle on January 2, 1945.

Laura Mae began her teaching career in a one room school house teaching eight grades in West Virginia. She retired after more than 25 years from Mapleton Local Schools, where she was an elementary school teacher at Ruggles-Troy. Throughout her tenure, Laura Mae was awarded teacher of the year.

She was a devoted member of Park Street Brethren Church, where she was a Titus woman for M.O.P.S. Laura Mae remained very active throughout her life. She loved to flower garden and was an enthusiastic pen pal with many friends. Laura Mae was honored as an Ashland Woman of Achievement.

Laura Mae is survived by two daughters, Andrea (George T. “Tom”) Atwood of Cleveland Heights and Celia Rogers of Canton; one sister, Beth Simes of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania; three nephews, Mark (Holly) Simes of Cincinnati, Kim Satterfield of Vienna, West Virginia, and Jan Satterfield of Roswell, Georgia; and several extended members of the family.

In addition to her parents, Laura Mae is preceded in death by her husband, Hayward Paul Riffle who passed away in 1984; one son, Darrell Riffle in 1965; and a sister, Eunice Satterfield in 1979.

Funeral services will be Monday, February 25, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the Denbow-Gasche Funeral Home with Reverend Nate Bebout and Brother Harry Finkbone officiating. A meal and time of fellowship will follow the service in the Legacy Room of the funeral home. Interment will be in Nova Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday, February 24, 2019 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
