Obituary for Dennis "Denny" L. Van Scoy

Dennis "Denny" L. Van Scoy
Dennis L. (Denny) Van Scoy, 75 passed into our Heavenly Father's Kingdom Tuesday evening, September 13, 2016 after a battle with cancer at his home in Ashland, Ohio.

Denny was born on July 28, 1941 to Frank and Bessie Evelyn (Foster) Van Scoy in Greenwich, Ohio. He attended Greenwich High School and graduated from Andrew's Barber College in Columbus. On June 1, 1963, he married Sandra Kaye White of Polk and began his career as an aspiring barber at the "Harry Reed Shop" in Ashland in 1960 and also for Howard Miller. Denny opened his own shop, "Abon Barber Shop" and after several years, sold it to open "Denny's Barber Shop" in 1968.

Denny's interest in helping people with hair loss led him to further education and the creation of his current business at the Van Scoy Hair Clinic. He constructed two commercial buildings on Claremont Avenue in Ashland as a home for his Barber Shop and Hair Replacement Studio in 1974. The Mediterranean style brick buildings for his studio and another across the street support several area businesses as well.

His time in the hair business was shared by his wife Sandy and it led to several awards in the field. Denny was awarded the "New Man Honor of Leadership" for the largest volume of distribution in North Central Ohio in 1981. He was the third largest volume distributor in the United States in 1980, and he served as the only Cymbion Fusion Center for the area at that time. He went on to become a member of Transitions and International Hair Goods companies. It was through those companies that he received awards for outstanding sales which authorized him to become a national sales trainer and consultant.

Denny's two sons Scott (Ashland) and Todd (Olmsted Township) have embraced their father's business which has allowed Van Scoy Hair to become a family affair and opened doors for hair opportunities in Cleveland and Columbus facilities. Denny taught them to make his client's needs a priority and he always searched for innovative ways to improve his service. Joining PAI Medical Group gave the business a chance to be a leader in hair restoration. Denny was very active in his business until his recent death and his work continues as a legacy through them to help others.

Denny was a member of the Ashland Jaycees, earning the title of Jaycee of the month and spoke pin awards. He also served as their soap box derby director and official in his years with the group and he provided leadership as the president in 1969. Denny loved to bowl and was a league champion and director of the American Bowling Congress through the 1960's and 70's.

Denny noted his favorite hobby was being a sports spectator for his son's activities in baseball, basketball, and football. Upon their graduation from Ashland High School in the 1980's and later marriages, his interest continued to his grandchildren and their pursuits in soccer, cross country, cheer, music, and dance. He loved to go to the Ashland University Sports events and traveled to support the Lady Eagles National Championship team in 2013. He was a wonderful carpenter and constructed much of the cabinetry at his business and at his rental properties. He also enjoyed his extended families and shared countless holidays and reunions to cultivate the bonds of family fellowship. Those bonds were further encouraged with the 23 years of family vacations to Litchfield Beach where he and his wife opened their beach condominium to create treasured memories. Friends and family will remember his valuable lessons of hard work, his celebration of nature at home and at the beach, and his love and devotion to family. His sparkling eyes, his kind heart, his ornery spirit, and his yellow shirts will be treasured memories for those who held him dear.

Denny is survived by his wife Sandra of 53 years, his two sons, Scott (Ann) and Todd (Lorie), five grandchildren, Benjamin, William, Mary, Sydney, and Maxwell, and his three brothers, Larry (Mary) Foster of Nova, Randall (Cathy) of Lisbon, and Clayton (Margie) of Butler, Pennsylvania.

He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Evelyn Van Scoy.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, September 19, 2016 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 508 Center Street, Ashland, Ohio 44805 with Pastor Michael Koch officiating. Friends may call in Jack’s Place at Trinity Lutheran Church from 4-7 PM on Sunday, September 18 and one hour before the service from 10-11:00 AM on Monday in the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 508 Center Street, Ashland, Ohio 44805 or to Hospice of North Central Ohio, 1050 Dauch Drive, Ashland, Ohio 44805.

Denny's family would like to thank the friends and family who helped to care for Denny during his two-month fight with travel accommodations, home care, prayers, and loving support. Special gratitude is extended to Faye, Cathy, and Carol for being "earth angels" at such an important time.

For those who may not be able to attend, online condolences may be shared on the funeral home’s website at denbowfh.com.
