Obituary for Voy L. Harmon

Voy L. Harmon
Voy Lee Harmon, 82

Voy Lee Harmon, 82, passed away Sunday, January 29, 2017.

He was born on July 18, 1934 in Arkansas to James Carl and Clara Barton (nee Lyons) Harmon. He moved to Ohio in 1950 and graduated from Savannah High School in 1952.

He married the love of his life, Mary Lou Imhoff, on May 8, 1954.

He worked in the tire mold industry, working his way up from sweeping floors to Plant Manager at Akron Standard in Greenwich, Ohio, R & D Mold in Mount Pleasant, Tennessee, and Quality Mold in Tyler Texas.

He retired in 1999 from Quality Mold in Akron, Ohio.

Voy loved playing and watching sports all of his life. He played basketball in high school and beyond, baseball, and fast pitch softball. He coached little league baseball and softball, refereed high school and college basketball and attended numerous high school state tournaments. He participated in golf leagues and never missed the opportunity to attend the sporting events of family and friends.

Voy served as a devoted volunteer and member of the Savannah United Methodist Church and a member of Ashland Masonic Lodge #151. Locally, he was also involved in the Savannah Volunteer Fire Department, Clear Creek Historical Society, held various officer positions and was a Melvin Jones recipient while a lifetime member of the Savannah Lions Club. For many years, he could be found flipping pancakes at the monthly Saturday Pancake Breakfasts. Voy’s leadership was instrumental in the formation of the Savannah Youth League and Savannah ball fields, where he also served as a coach and fan for many years.

Over the years, Voy was continually involved at Crestview Local Schools. Voy was an 18+ year member of the school board where he had the honor of signing and presenting all of his daughters’ diplomas. He was a founding member and trustee of the Crestview Educational Foundation, where he participated in numerous school levy campaigns and frequently attended Senior Citizens Luncheons.

With his family and friends, Voy loved attending monthly Saturday Night Supper Club dinners, Post Card Club meetings, annual fishing trips, athletic and musical events, family gatherings of any kind and participated in local plays including the Adario Farmers’ Institute, Butler Township and Savannah Community plays.

He was a father figure to many and taught and demonstrated kindness and love to everyone.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Lou; his four daughters, Bethany (Doug) Fitch of Ashland, Anita (Randy) Cains of Shiloh, Janet Nelson of Hudson, Amy (Darrell) Clark of Nova; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He is proceeded in death by both parents, grandparents and both of his brothers, James Howard and Jesse Charles.

Funeral services will be held, Saturday, February 4, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. in the Savannah United Methodist Church with Reverend Johnnie F. Swann officiating. Interment will be in the Savannah Cemetery. Friends may call Friday, February 3, 2017 in the Denbow-Gasche Funeral Home from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a masonic service at 7:00 p.m. An additional visitation will be on Saturday from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a Lion’s service prior to the funeral ceremony in the church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the United Methodist Church of Savannah, 10 West Main Street, Savannah, OH 44874 or the Crestview Educational Foundation, PO Box 1701, Mansfield, OH 44901.
