Robert L. “Bob” Wirts
Robert “Bob” Wirts, 99, of Ashland, passed away early Saturday morning June 10, 2017.
He was born July 24, 1917 in Richland County to the late Samuel and Eula (Linn) Wirts. Bob attended Savannah Schools.
He served his country as a veteran of the United States Army from 1941 to 1946 in the 42nd Rainbow Division.
Bob was instrumental in the passing of a state of Ohio bill to make Route 42 a memorial highway and In 2012 a sign was put up on Route 42 between Ashland and Mansfield with this designation.
He retired from Weldon Tool Company in Cleveland at the age of 65.
Bob was a 32 year member of the American Legion Harry Higgins Post #88 in Ashland. He was a 32 degree mason and member of the Ashland Masonic Lodge # 151 F & AM, the Ashland County Shrine Club and the Young Men’s Business Club where he served as the club treasurer for many years. He was also a member of the City Club, and the Community Improvement Corp.
He and his wife were avid golfers playing in the Friday Night Couples League at Brookside. They vacationed in the Outer Banks, N.C. with family for many years.
On May 14, 1942 he married Mary (Scott) who survives. He is also survived by his daughters, Sally (Stan) Valentine of Ashland; Carol (Tom) Harry of Suffolk, VA and Debra (Mike) Hanley of Virginia Beach, VA; six grandchildren, Christopher (Sabrina) Valentine, Benjamin (Toni) Valentine, Charles Thomas (Hanna) Harry, Robert Harry, Kelsey Hanley and Michael Hanley and four great grandchildren, Paige Driebelibis, Andrew (Taylor) Driebelibis and Rosemary and Abigail Valentine.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Charles Wirts.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Denbow-Gasche Funeral Home with the Rev. Ben Roby officiating. Private family committal services will follow at the Ashland Cemetery with the Ashland Veterans Honor Guard conducting full military honors. The family will greet friends following the committal service at a luncheon at the First United Methodist Church, 220 Sandusky St. Ashland.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 220 Sandusky St, Ashland, Ohio 44805 or to Hospice of North Central Ohio, 1050 Dauch Dr., Ashland, Ohio 44805.
