Sanford Reed Bowen
Sanford Reed Bowen passed away August 30, 2017 at University Hospital Samaritan Medical Center, the place of his birth, November 8, 1944. Sandy’s birth occurred on the 2nd wedding anniversary of his parents, Virginia L. Page and Sanford Keith (Keety) Bowen. Sandy’s father was killed in action during the battle of Reipertsweiller, France during the winter of 1944-45, World War II.
As a youth Sandy participated in Boy Scouts and YMCA athletic programs, spending summers at Camp Avery Hand, Glenmont, Ohio, and hand carved initials of “John Glen”, Ohio’s former astronaut, can be found within the cabins of Camp Avery Hand. Sandy was a member of the Ashland High School swim team, setting many event records. He continued his interest in swimming while employed as pool manager of Brookside Pool, as Aquatic Director of Ashland YMCA, and in Florida where he coached several area high School/ YMCA swim teams.
He was a graduate of Ashland High School and Ashland University (Ashland College). Sandy was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award, sponsored by the Ashland High School Alumni Association. He served as a teacher and assistant principal, then as administrator in the Sarasota County, FL. School District. During his years of teaching in Florida he also enjoyed serving as a Boy Scout leader for Special Needs children.
During the later years of his life, after retirement, Sandy enjoyed designing and landscaping his homes in Florida and Tennessee.
Sandy was married to Suzanne Tustin, the mother of their two daughters, Lisa and Lori. In 1984 he was married to Marilyn (Holdsworth) and the couple has resided in Florida since that time. He is survived by his wife Marilyn; his daughters Lisa and Lori; a grandson, Austin; his mother, Virginia (Ginny) Page Walker of Loudonville; a sister, Beth (Tony) Sanchez of Ashland; nieces, Jamie and Rosemary; nephew, Zachary; cousins, Tim, Mark, Becky, Jim, Polly, Julie, Debbie, Adam and Reed and cousins John, Jeanne, Barb and Tom; Phyllis, Connie and Steve.
Sandy will be interred in Mount Hope Cemetery, Shiloh, Ohio, at a later date, during a private family ceremony.
The family of Mr. Bowen would like to thank the staff of the Good Shepherd Skilled Rehabilitation Center for their wonderful care of Sandy during his stay there, as well as University Hospital Samaritan Medical Center.
